Quaker: The Quake 3 Mac OS X Theme
This theme was inspired by the great game by
id software called Quake 3 Arena, and its expansion pack Quake 3: Team Arena. Most of
the flat textures used in this theme are directly from this game. Therefore ANY credit for making the flat textures should go to id. Thanks guys. Also a VERY special thanks to Max Rudberg, who
got me interested in OS X theme making in the first place. On to the interesting stuff.
If you have any questions or comments about the theme, you can contact the author at SeniorWebmaster@mac.com. Positive comments and constructive criticism are appreciated. I'll try to respond to as many emails personally as I can, but there are some mail server issues that prevent me from always being able to reply.
If you downloaded an old version of the quaker theme, there is an independant aqua restore download in the "Old Versions" folder.
Description:
Quaker is a Quake inspired theme which uses all sorts of neat large textures from the popular game. The theme is very graphically/texturally intense. It employs gobs and wads of huge textures which make it a pioneer in the niftiness field. Every part of this theme has in some way been touched by id (Creators of games like Doom and Quake). In most cases their work was altered to fit with the theme.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Please only use the newest version avalable. Do NOT use and of the older archived versions unless you know exactly what you are getting yourself into. They are for historical record only. The newest version will always be avalable from this page.
Installation:
- Go download ShapeShifter NOW!
- Just click this link and ShapeShifter will do the rest!
- Ok... If you don't have ShapeShifter yet you can download just the plain .guiKit file here. But you will need ShapeShifter to use this theme.

Known Bugs / Issues / Annoyances:
It should be assumed that each of the following bugs have been / will be fixed in the next version. Sort of a bugs (to be or already) squashed list.
Most of these issues lie with the fault of the interface rendering engine in OS X. This theme just makes them visible sometimes.
# means the issue is for the most part, beoynd my control.
-
2.0b
- Apple in their infinate wisdom decided to make scrollbars rediculasly silly... I did the best that the OS will allow.
-
1.3 (Second Release, But for OS X 10.3 Only)
- Apple forces all metal windows to be greyscale no more blue circuit board background. >:(((
- The pushbuttons are still too dark when they are the default button.
- Some of the body text (the yellow) in carbon apps when in the tabs of utility windows such as Adobe GoLive is too light to read, Even for me.
- The theme must be converted to ShapeShifter compatable.
-
1.0 (First Public Release)
- Completely impliment Mac OS X 10.3 functionality.
- Re-redo the small progress bars, and some parts of the large ones.
-
1.0b
- Some of the text colors still bug me.
- The boot panel should look better.
-
0.6
- # Tabs on safari sometimes look disconnected from the bar above.
- # Some cocoa apps use a document window type with hard coded title bar colors. These will draw black text on the nearly black title bar of this theme. Carbon apps are safe though and the text will appear yellow.
- # Some title bars stretch, some title bars tile. This confuses me, but it still looks neat either way.
- Most of the Menubar icons are slightly off color.
- Disabled menu items are nearly invisible
- Pop-up menus in carbon apps need to be fixed. they don't align right. (don't ask)
-
0.5
- I don't like the title bars.
- The colors really frost my butt.
10.3 Cautions
For those of you who insist on using the old unsafe version of Quaker I have FINALLY just gone ahead and included the restore files in the standard download. You may have issues with the restore because it has not been rebuilt for OS X v 10.3.8,
so PLEASE USE WITH CAUTION and backup your Extras file (by default located here: /System/Library/Frameworks/Carbon.framework/) before installing the old version from the "Old Versions " directory.
Frameworks/HIToolbox.framework/Resources/Extras.rsrc
The "Old Versions" directory is provided mearly for historical value and is not necissarily intended to be used as the majority of its contents WILL be out of date. Please use the newest version avalable which will be linked on THIS PAG E only.
Emergency Repairs: FOR MAC OS X 10.2 OR QUAKER 1.0 ONLY
If you happen to have problems with your Finder (and other applications) launching. Don't freak out, just follow this step to fix it. This does not mean the theme is unstable, It's just a precaution to have it here.
-
Execute the folowing command as one line (broken for readability) in the terminal or at any command prompt and enter your password when it asks: (You can just copy and paste the line into your terminal.)
sudo cp /Library/Themes/Quaker.theme/QuakerExtras.rsrc
/System/Library/Frameworks/Carbon.framework/Frameworks
/HIToolbox.framework/Resources/Extras.rsrc
Once you enter your password and press return, the finder will load up and your system will be happy. To immediately experience the theme across the entire system it is recomended that you reboot.
